Build a positive farming mindset

Why looking after your mental health is important for you, your family and farm.

Running a farm or an agribusiness is more than a job. It is a lifelong commitment filled with challenges and unpredictability. Having a positive farming mindset isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. Changing weather and volatile markets means the only certainty is uncertainty.

In 2025, psychological resilience in farming is more important than ever. Mental health and mindset can affect business success as much as rainfall or commodity prices.

Understand stress and decision fatigue

The relentless pressures of farming can cause overwhelming stress and decision fatigue.

The demands are constant and varied:

  • managing staff
  • addressing equipment breakdowns
  • feeding and managing livestock
  • handling financial paperwork
  • negotiating with banks, suppliers and contractors
  • keeping up with compliance
  • juggling family responsibilities

Tough conditions can affect your decision-making, leading to costly errors under emotional duress. Decision fatigue often turns into procrastination or causes emotional reactions. This can cause minor issues becoming significant hurdles.

Optimism and risk of farming

Farming and agribusiness are a delicate balance of hope and calculated risk. The same ingrained optimism that drives you to sow crops when there is not enough rain rainfall also fuels investment in uncertain markets.

But unchecked optimism can lead to financial overextension. Having external support can help you balance with realistic and strategic planning. As an agribusiness finance broker, I help you make the right decisions, balancing gut instinct with facts.

Isolation and the mental load

Many agribusiness and farm owners operate in isolation. Carrying the heavy mental burden of sustaining the farm for your family and future generations can cloud your judgment. It can also make it difficult to seek help or take necessary breaks. Recognising the need for support to nurture a positive mindset is vital in maintaining resilience. The most successful farmers are those who can identify when they need external help.

Strategies for building a positive farming mindset

There are many things you can you to take care of your mental health and build a positive, resilient mindset. Here are a few options to consider.

Pause before reacting

Give yourself a buffer (even 24 hours) before making big decisions.

Keep dialogue open

Speak with trusted advisers. Talk to your broker or family to get different perspectives on challenges. Talk to others in your industry or community and see if they have some ideas you haven’t thought of.

Commit to regular business reviews

Regular business check-ins and financial reviews will address potential issues, and reduce surprises and stress. Involve relevant family members and advisors to ensure everyone is up to date.

Acknowledge your emotions but act logically

Emotions will always be a part of home and farm life. Recognising them is essential, but don’t let them control you. Make decisions grounded in logic and strategic thinking.
